BRITCON Takes Place This Week

COMMUNITY NEWS posted on 12 AUG 2009 by Jim Zabek

The British Historical Games Society hosts another BRITCON gaming convention this week.

This weekend sees thousands of heavily armed soldiers converging on Manchester, as Ancient Romans, Orcs and Goblins, and Space Marines from the far flung reaches of the Galaxy all take part in a series of fiercely contested battles as The British Historical Games Society’s (BHGS) annual BRITCON wargames convention again returns to the University of Manchester from Thursday 14th - Sunday 17th August.

Table top wargames can best be described as three dimensional chess played with hundreds (or thousands!) of accurately researched and detailed miniature figures fighting across on realistically modeled tabletop landscapes.

BRITCON offers competitions spanning all periods of history from Ancient times through WW2 and beyond, even encompassing Science-fiction inspired Future Wars and games based on imagined fantasy realms. If you are interested in any aspect of warfare, or history throughout the ages or if you just fancy yourself as an arm-chair general then BRITCON 2009 is the place for you.

BRITCON is the UK’s biggest wargaming competition and brings together players from all over the UK as well as attracting entries from as far a field as the USA, Australia and all over Europe. The event also includes a trade show where visitors can buy games, figures and terrain, a “bring & buy” and a number of impressive participation & demonstration games where day visitors are encouraged to join in and try their hand at the various games on display.

In the evening there are added attractions such as the Wargamers Pub quiz and various other activities of interest to games players. The evening entertainment has proved to be a very successful feature of BRITCON and as usual there are lots of terrific prizes to be won.

The emphasis on the whole event is to have a weekend of fun in a wargaming setting. A significant hidden benefit is that Manchester University is right in the heart of the City with easy connections to many local attractions and parking on site is free to delegates throughout the event.

For further information or if you want to visit the trade show on the 15th and 16th August please contact the On-site convention team on 07803 007 685 (ask for JD McNeil)
